The Exodus of People from the Cities
Zbigniew Libera

2010
digital print, wooden construction

The work is a contemporary version of a panorama, the once popular convention of visualizing knowledge about distant places and events, and often – as in the case of the Racławice Panorama presented in Wrocław – battle scenes. Libera’s staged vision depicts the world as we know it, but it is the world after the apocalypse, one of those that we usually witness through images from other parts of the world, affected by war, climate catastrophes or natural disasters. Using the technique known from such series as Positives, Masters or the feature debut Walser, the artist revives and gives credibility to the images that have faded in the process of media aesthetisation.
